Vegetable prices fall drastically in city
Jan. 13: The harvest festival of Makara Sankranthi is just around the corner and the high prices for vegetables have finally started to decrease across the state. According to vendors, the prices of most vegetables including onions and tomatoes have fallen since Wednesday.According to the officials of the Horticultural Producers'Co-operative Marketing and Processing Society Ltd. (HOPCOMS), the prices of most vegetables have fallen by ` four to five on Thursday following an increased supply of the same in the market.
According to data released by the Krishimaratavahini, which is the official agricultural market information centre, the prices of onions
have fallen from ` 25 to ` 35, the prices of tomatoes have decreased from ` 45 to 20 and the prices of vegetables like brinjal and capsicum are around ` 10 now while the same cost ` 15 just a few days ago. Similarly, the prices for potatoes have decreased to ` 20 whereas earlier the same cost ` 45. The prices of most vegetables were hovering around ` 40 until last week but this week, the prices have fallen, said an official of the HOPCOMS. Vegetable vendors feel that the increased supply is the major reason for the sudden change in the prices and a vendor from the Yeshvantpur APMC yard said that over the past few days, the vegetable supply to the city from neighbouring districts, especially Tamil Nadu, has increased and this has resulted in lower prices.
Generally vegetable prices rise as the festive season draws near but this year, there is a reverse trend. The prices of most vegetables have decreased by half, said the vendor. However, many people feel that the prices may rise again.
According to Mr Raghava Ithal, who is a hotelier, I am worried about price fluctuation. We have been buying vegetables at lower prices since Tuesday but we fear that the prices may rise again after a week. Fortunately as there is no problem of rain or mist in Tamil Nadu, we hope to get a continuous supply.
