HDK faces privilege motion over remarks

Jan. 12: Four ruling party Members of the Legislative Assembly moved a privilege motion against former chief minister and president of the state unit of Janata Dal (S), H.D. Kumaraswamy, for his remarks against BJP legislators, on Wednesday. Mr Siddu Savadi, Mr Nandish Reddy, Mr M.P. Kumaraswamy and Mr Suresh Gowda are signatories to the motion. They insisted that the former chief minister should be summoned and admonished for stating that the House was being run like an arrack shop. While moving the motion, Mr Gowda and Mr Savadi charged Mr Kumaraswamy with showing scant respect to the House and ruling party legislators by stating that it was being run without any order and therefore resembled an arrack shop.Admitting the motion, Speaker, K.G. Bopaiah, said a discussion would not be allowed as Mr Kumaraswamy was a member of Lok Sabha, and not of the Assembly. Quoting the rules of procedure, Mr Bopaiah said the notice would be forwarded to Speaker of Lok Sabha, Meira Kumar, with a request for an inquiry into the issue and submission of a report. Based on the report from the presiding officer of Lok Sabha, the Legislative Assembly would take action against the former chief minister, he added. Earlier, the House witnessed a heated exchange between Dal (S) and BJP legislators when the former trooped in with a big suitcase reportedly filled with documents to support cases of wrongdoing by the state government.
