Cell phones, intoxicants recovered from Amritsar jail

Amritsar: Twelve mobile phones and several intoxicants were seized from prisoners today during day-long searches in Amritsar Central Jail.

A team comprising five Magistrates, ten senior police officers, including DCP Amar Singh Chahal, and 400 policemen conducted the searches.

The raid was carried out following information about alleged nexus between prisoners and the jail staff, Deputy Commissioner Kahan Singh Pannu said.

Twelve mobile phones and various types of intoxicants were recovered from prisoners during the searches, he said.

Pannu said the district administration had recommended to the state government strict action against the jail staff for "unlawful" activities, including supply of drugs, inside the prison.
